Dentures

What are dentures?

Dentures are dental devices that rest on your gumline, designed to replace missing teeth. Conventional dentures are removable, but many others can only be removed by a trained dentist, like Dr. Kamanin. Dentures may be best if you have lost all or most of their teeth. Depending on the number of teeth you have lost, you may benefit from a full denture or partial denture plate.

If you’ve lost your teeth due to advanced gum disease, severe tooth decay, or because of an injury, dentures may be an ideal option to restore your smile. Full dentures may be an optimal solution if you’ve lost all of your teeth along your dental arch. But if you’re missing two or more teeth, partial dentures may be a better option.

Why would I need dentures?

Dentures replace missing teeth. If you’re missing even just one or two teeth, you may develop difficulty chewing or speaking. Dentures help with both of those activities. Also, Dr. Kamanin customizes dentures to look like your natural teeth, restoring your smile.

Are dentures uncomfortable?

When you first use dentures, they may feel unnatural. For a few weeks or months, you may find them awkward or uncomfortable. Typically, it takes a bit of practice to eat and speak with your dentures.

The muscles in your cheeks and tongue will hold the dentures in place, but in the beginning, they may feel loose or heavy. You may also experience mild irritation or soreness. But Dr. Kamanin will do everything he can to ease your discomfort as you transition into using your dentures.

What is the procedure for getting dentures?

If Dr. Kamanin determines you’re a good candidate for dentures, he begins the process by removing any current diseased or damaged teeth. He’ll take a mold of your remaining upper and lower teeth to build customized dentures that fit your mouth. Once the dentures are ready, he checks the fit and makes adjustments, if necessary.

How do I clean my dentures?

Dr. Kamanin recommends cleaning your dentures daily. Before brushing, rinse your dentures in water first. Use a soft-bristled brush and a nonabrasive toothpaste to remove food particles caught in your dentures. Brushing prevents stains without scratching. Dr. Kamanin recommends soaking your dentures in a solution when you’re not using them. Otherwise, they can become misshapen.
